Back Story:

"Excited to have just bought a brand new mandolin, and having just learnt the song which inspired me to buy the mandolin in the first place being Losing My Religion by R.E.M., I was intrigued by two of the chords in the song and then Googled a chord chart and chose the first few extra chords that looked easy to play and would go with the first two chords and that's how this song came about. Lyrically, it was written just a few days after the Melbourne Cup in November, which is where the line "It’s like betting on a race, Already a basket case" came from. As you can probably guess from the negativity of the line, and the negativity of the song as a whole, I did lose my bet on the horse named "Master Of Reality" on the Melbourne Cup. If I had won, perhaps I would have written a completely different song altogether. Another indication showing just how much I was into Black Sabbath at the time, and another inspiration for the negative lyrics of the song, is that the name of the horse shared the same name with one of the albums which is why I picked it. Lyrically the Bee Gee's song "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" was a big influence in writing the chorus "A message just for you"."
