After purchasing his apartment in October 2018, one of the first things Joel did was to set up a permanent area where he could record music. ALDI have musical "Special Buys" sale every year so in February 2019 he bought an electric drumkit. Until this point, Joel had never played drums so he practiced almost every night for several months and eventually by July he was now adquately accomplished to play all the instruments of a typical song comfortably, so "Forever Girl" EP, what would become Joel's debt solo release, quickly started to take shape.

Much to Josh Whalan's encouragement and advice, who also ended up mixing and mastering the "Forever Girl" EP, Joel began to phase out the use the P.A. quality dynamic microphone he'd been using since 2005 with a newly purchased Rode NT1-A Condenser Microphone. Additionally, Josh also suggested that he instead of using the microphone input of a 2006 MacMini, he bought the Focusrite Scarlett Solo (2nd Gen) external sound card. Since Joel was no longer restricted to using computers with microphone or line in inputs, he was able to start using his Macbook Pro 15 inch 2015 for music as well.
